The task of ensuring safe operations of commercial and private aircraft falls on air traffic controllers. They must coordinate the movements of thousands of aircraft, keep them at safe distances from each other, direct them during takeoff and landing from airports, direct them around bad weather and ensure that traffic flows smoothly with minimal delays.

When you think about air traffic control, the image of men and women in the tower of an airport probably comes to mind. However, the air traffic control system is much more complex than that.

The movement of aircraft through the various airspace divisions is much like players moving through a "zone" defense that a basketball or football team might use. As an aircraft travels through a given airspace division, it is monitored by the one or more air traffic controllers responsible for that division. The controllers monitor this plane and give instructions to the pilot. As the plane leaves that airspace division and enters another, the air traffic controller passes it off to the controllers responsible for the new airspace division.

Air traffic services, in I.R.Iran, are provided by Iranian ATCOs (Air traffic controllers). The main purposes of these services are:

- aircraft collision prevention, and
- orderly flow of air traffic maintenance and expedition.

Iranian ATCOs in Tehran Area control Center (picture below) and tens of control towers at tens of airports have provided safe and sound services for tens of years without even a single case of fatal injury caused by their malfunctioning.

Not only the explicit service of ATC is provided by indigenous ATCOs, but also the momentous task of airspace design is carried out by Iranian experts. General directorate of ATS develops its own versions of en-route and airport charts and Jeppesen is not used in Iran officially.

Iranian ATCOs wear a specialized uniform specifying their ratings of Radar, Approach, ACC, Tower or without rating (the photo below is of an approach controller in Tehran-Mehrabad International Airport).

General directorate of ATS works in close coordination with Iran ATCA, the Iranian controllers association, and takes the best advantage of its recommendations.
